How to prepare items for storage

1. Choose the Right Storage Unit Size

  • Select a unit that fits your needs comfortably — not too small that you have to cram, and not too large that items shift around.

  • Drive-up access units make loading and unloading heavy or bulky items easier.

2. Clean and Dry Everything Thoroughly

  • Furniture: Wipe down surfaces to remove dust and dirt. Ensure all pieces are dry to prevent mold.

  • Appliances: Empty, clean, and leave doors open for a while to air out moisture.

  • Clothing and linens: Wash and completely dry before packing.

  • Electronics: Dust off and remove batteries to avoid corrosion.

3. Disassemble Large Furniture

  • Take apart beds, tables, and shelving to save space and reduce risk of damage.

  • Store screws and small parts in labeled bags taped to the furniture.

4. Use Durable Packing Materials

  • Use strong boxes or plastic bins to protect your items.

  • Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap or blankets.

  • Cover furniture with moving blankets or sheets to protect from dust.

5. Label Boxes Clearly

  • Write contents on multiple sides of each box.

  • Keep an inventory list for easy reference.

6. Pack Strategically

  • Place heavier items at the bottom, lighter on top.

  • Store frequently used items near the front.

  • Leave a pathway inside the unit for easy access.
